Many existing sewer systems are under considerable stress, either because of rapid growth or deterioration of an aging infrastructure, with some systems dating back more than 100 years. Growing communities and gradual land use changes have resulted in a drastic increase in loads on an older infrastructure that was not designed to sustain these additional flows.
